How honey can elevate your breadmaking.

Pizza has existed in many different forms throughout history, but it wasn’t until the 1800s that pizza as we enjoy it today was born.

With how well-loved pizza has become since that time, it’s no surprise that many people have experimented creatively with this dish!

Culinary innovation isn’t just fun — it’s also great for enjoying the creation process and coming up with something unique that you’ll love.

Using sugar in bread making is one way to explore new flavors. While adding sugar isn’t typically necessary (depending on what type of bread you’re making), a recipe with a hint of sweetness can make the end product even more perfect.

Sugar doesn’t just add flavor; it also holds moisture so that it can be released more gradually. What this means is that adding sugary goodness to your pizza helps keep it fluffy, moist, and oh-so-delightful.

And while there are many sweeteners out there, nothing comes close to honey!

Honey is a brilliant option as it not only helps to create a beautiful, golden crust but also keeps the dough moist while packing a light, fragrant flavor.

This sweet treat also contains enzymes that improve the dough’s texture, which is why it’s been used in myriad types of baking for centuries.

Honey is a simple, sweet addition to your pizza dough that’ll help you achieve the rich flavors and golden crust you’ve been looking for. Flavorful and packed full of health benefits, this recipe is an excellent addition to your pizza cooking repertoire!

So you’ve got your ingredients and put your baking hat on. It’s time to make a scrumptious pizza dough that’ll have your guests asking for more!

  1. Preheat

This is a cardinal rule in pizza baking — always preheat your oven before popping in the pies! With this recipe, you’ll want to preheat to 475–500 °F (220–260 °C) for about 20 to 25 minutes. If you have a pizza stone, preheat the stone in the oven as you wait

  2. Combine wet and dry ingredients separately.

Mix water, oil, and honey in a deep bowl. In another container, combine the flour, yeast, and salt, making sure to use a wooden spoon to keep things nicely mixed

  3. Combine wet and dry ingredients.

Once your wet and dry ingredients are ready and mixed thoroughly, combine them! Add your wet ingredients to the dry ones and work everything together to form a soft ball

  4. Knead thoroughly.

Knead the dough for three minutes

  5. Leave to rise.

After kneading the dough, put it in a lightly oiled bowl covered with a damp cloth to let it rise. Make sure to keep it in a sufficiently warm and humid place until the dough doubles in size, which will take roughly an hour.

  6. Go crazy with the toppings!

You have complete freedom to be creative here! My personal favorite is the Bianca: white cheeses (gorgonzola, mozzarella, and parmesan), red onion, pepper, and honey! When I’m up for it, I also like to flood my pizza with shrimp, scallops, meat, and (of course) a whole slathering of cheese. Yum!

  7. Cook.

Happy with how your pizza is looking? It’s time to pop it into the oven using the hot pizza stone you have prepared. Depending on how hot your oven can get, the baking time should be around 10 to 15 minutes. However, it’s best to stay nearby and keep your eye on the pie

  8. Eat your fill!

No pizza recipe is complete without the most exciting part: eating the pizza! Tuck into your golden-crust pizza and enjoy the flavors that dance on your tongue.

Pizza Honey Recipe Notes

  • Let the oven heat up for about half an hour before baking. This is non-negotiable in many baked dishes, and pizza is no exception! By preheating the oven, you’re making sure that your pizza cooks as quickly as possible while retaining its immense flavors
  • If you haven’t already invested in a pizza stone, it’s worth buying one. It’s a total game-changer for home-cooked pizzas! A pizza stone contains tiny cracks that allow evaporating steam to escape, helping to dry out the crust and leave you with crisp bread with a hint of crunch!
  • Proof your yeast first. Because of honey’s famed antibacterial properties, some types of honey can kill yeast. To make sure you’re not wasting any ingredients or time, test your yeast first by proofing it before starting. This way, you’ll know the yeast can do its job well!
  • Choose fresh and high-quality ingredients. Like the Italians, consider the quality of your ingredients. It’s worth investing in good, high-quality flour, for example, to get the most out of your pizza making. Fresh meats, sauces, and more will also help your bread stand out from the competition.
  • Don’t go too crazy with toppings! This one, I admit, is a hard thing to do. Pizza is just so much better when you can put everything you want on top of it! However, not getting carried away with the amount you’re putting on can spell a world of difference. Less is often more when it comes to toppings!
  • Add more olive oil. High heat can diminish the oil’s natural flavor, so remember to drizzle more on top if you’re looking for that rich taste.
  • Use less honey. If you’re looking to swap sugar out for honey, make sure to use a smaller amount as honey is sweeter than sugar! You’ll also need to lower the amount of liquids you’re using. For example, if you have ¼ cup of honey, you’ll need to reduce your water by about ⅛ of a cup
  • Don’t over-knead your dough! Kneading your dough is a crucial step, but it should only take you about 4 to 6 minutes. If you overdo it, the dough can become crumbly — something you definitely don’t want in pizzas!

Frequently Asked Questions

Expand All:
Can I add seasonings to my Honey Pizza Dough?

Yes, of course! I recommend adding 1–3 tablespoons of seasoning in total. Start smaller, tasting along the way, while being careful not to overdo it.

My personal preference when it comes to seasoning choices is rosemary, thyme, and chili flakes. Italian seasoning is a great, authentic option too!

Can I double or triple this recipe?

Absolutely! However, doubling or tripling yeast won’t always work. You should use and check out the Bakers Formula to make sure everything will turn out as expected. It’s definitely worth spending the time on, especially if guests are coming in a few hours!

Can I freeze my Honey Pizza Dough?

Yes! Honey pizza dough can be frozen for up to three months. Just make sure it’s fully risen before you freeze it and keep it divided into multiple smaller portions. As much as possible, bake all your dough as soon as you can!
